Ancient Civilizations Project

Important Information:

• This is a small group project (2 to 3 members),
• This project will be completed during school time as much as possible
• Books and trusted internet sources may be used
• School books will remain in the classroom so they can be shared
• Students may go to the public library to source their own materials if they wish

Choose one of the following Ancient Civilizations to learn about and talk with me about it. Please note that a maximum of two groups per topic is allowed:

• Ancient China
• Ancient Egypt
• Ancient Greece
• Ancient India
• Ancient Iran
• Ancient Japan
• Ancient Aztec
• Ancient Mayan
• Ancient Mesopotamia
• Ancient Rome

If you have another ancient civilization idea, please come to talk with me about it.

Topics to include in the project:

• Beginnings of the Ancient Civilization (when, where, why)
• Daily Life for average people
• Arts / Culture
• Communication
• Belief Systems
• Government / Organization
• Technology / Inventions
• Trade / Commerce
• Downfall of the Ancient Civilization (why)
• A Timeline (when did this ancient civilization exist in comparison to others?)
• Interesting facts (optional)
• References of all books and websites used

Notes:

You will hand in your notes before you work on your presentation. You will list the source at the top of the page and write notes in your own words explaining what you learned from that source.

Demonstrating Learning:

Groups will present their learning to the class. Please choose from the following presentation methods:

• Speech with visuals
• Slideshow
• Video
• Podcast
• Poster
• Booklet, detailed with at least 10 pages

Please note that all groups must stand and present/share their work, even if they create a poster or booklet.

We have been learning about evolution, which has been very exciting. For this individual or pair mini-project, you will do the following:

• Decide on an animal or plant(but not humans) that you wish to learn more about
• Try to be creative and choose a unique animal/plant
• Research the evolutionary family tree of that specific animal
• Try to learn the evolutionary origins of your animal
• Include specific evolutionary adaptations of your animal
• Include a timeline so we know when everything happened
• Use phrases such as, “What did ________ evolve from?” when you do your research
• Make sure you understand the information you are including in your project
• Include pictures and diagrams that help to tell the story of your animal
• Present your information in a slide show (like PowerPoint) or on a small poster, 11″ x 17″, that’s the paper we often use for art
• Organize your information neatly and creatively
• Remember to reference websites used, including for images
• Have fun learning something new!

You and your group will research a health-related issue and create a presentation to educate your peers.

Requirements:

• Work in an assigned group
• Research using a minimum of 4 sources. The sources must be from the pre-approved list of websites below, or books from the library. You may need to go to the public library to find appropriate materials
• Develop 4 research questions related to your topic before you begin research. Show me your research questions before proceeding. These will guide your research and become the key ideas in your presentation
• Each member of the group must contribute to the research and present during the final presentation
• Take careful notes on the note sheets provided or on lined paper. Be sure to list where the notes come from (which book or website). You will need to hand in your notes with a copy of your presentation. I will compare the two to be sure that your presentation contains most of your notes and that there isn’t anything copied from a website.
• Your presentation should be detailed, thoughtful, and at least 5 minutes long
• You may present using a slideshow, a video, or podcast format

One of the most important decisions you will make in your life, someday, is your choice of career. Jobs of the future may require more education and training than ever before and some jobs of the future don’t even exist yet! The better prepared you are, the greater your chances for success.

To find a career that is a good fit for you, it’s a good idea to think carefully about your values, interests, skills, and personality. It’s also valuable to consider the skills that might be required or useful for the careers you are thinking about. For this project you will focus on one possible career path.

This is an individual project.

Use your list of your likes, interests, and skills to help with your thinking (you have already done this for your skills project).

You need to do some deep thinking about yourself and the following questions and answer them in as much detail as you can:

• Describe what might be your ideal job/career.
• What are the characteristics of this job/career that make it appealing to you and right for your values/interests/skills?
• What is it that you will be doing most days?
• Are you working with people, things, animals?
• Where will you live (for example, city, a different country, can you afford to live there?)
• What will your work environment be like?
• What is the average salary?
• How does this career contribute to your community or to the world.
• What are the education or training requirements?
• What are the skills you need?
• What are the job responsibilities?

Please remember that research can take place in different ways including internet, books, and talking to people.

Create a tri-fold brochure (which has six sides), on regular 8.5″ x 11″ paper to demonstrate your learning and share the information above in an organized way. I recommend using headings. You can do this by hand, or in Word using a Word template. If using Word, please work in your VSB account so you can work at school. Think carefully about which information will go on each panel of your brochure.
