Image expansion

This is a fun and colourful project! You’ll be amazed at how well you can do.

  • Choose a realistic magazine image or a card and place tape it to a piece of 8.5″ x 11″ paper. This is regular photocopy paper. Use a rolled piece of tape on the back for now. We will glue it down when finished.
  • Imagine what is beyond the edges of the image that you have chosen.
  • Sketch details lightly in pencil first.
  • The more details you add, the better.
  • Try to match the colours that are in your image using pencil crayons only.
  • Expand the image as much as you can.
  • Use these examples done by previous students as inspiration, but always do your own, best work.

Je m’appelle Project

The goal of this project is to introduce yourself, in French, to the class and to the rest of the 3rd floor.

You will use a regular sized piece of paper (8 1/2″ x 11″) to make a small poster about yourself. The posters will be displayed in the 3rd floor Learning Commons for a while.

Your poster should be colourful and should include relevant illustrations.

You should have at least 10 statements, in French, about you. Use words and phrases that we have learned in French class to make it easier. Use the textbooks and dictionaries we have in class.

Here are some suggestions of French phrases you know:

  • Je m’appelle…
  • J’ai…
  • Je suis
  • J’aime…
  • Je n’aime pas…

And, here are some things you have learned how to talk about in French:

  • age
  • fruit
  • numbers
  • colours

Board Game Design

You can work alone, with one other person, or with a maximum or two others (which would make a group of three).

First research the origin of board games and do the brainstorming with your group. Start with the pages I gave you in class.

Think about board games that you have played in the past. Then, think about which games you like the best, and about what was great about them.

  1. DESIGN YOUR BOARD GAME
  • Make the game relevant to ages close to yours, a bit younger and a bit older.
  • Stay away from violence of any kind.
  • Remember it is a board game, but the shape of the game is flexible.
  • Think about how you will store the game and the pieces (do you need to make a box to store it in?)
  • What is the object or aim of your game (what are the game players trying to do)?
  • What is the theme of your game?
  • What materials will you need to make your hand made board game?
  • What pieces will you need to make?
  • Write a draft of clear rules for your game, so that the players know how to play.

2. FEEDBACK

Ask another group to examine the plan for your game, provide written feedback, and sign their names to their feedback. Do this before you begin making your board game. When you have received this feedback, show it to me with your neatly organized plan.

3. REVISE YOUR BOARD GAME

Think about the feedback you have received on your hand made board game design. Think about how you can make the game or any fix problems people may have noticed. You don’t have to take all of the advice you received, but you should think about why you take the advice or not.

4. MAKE YOUR BOARD GAME

  • Gather your materials.
  • Share the work of making the game.
  • Make your game together.
  • Remember it should be as polished as possible. It should look nice as well as work well (be playable).
  • Make sure to creatively include the rules.

5. PLAY THE BOARD GAME

Play the board game with your group to see how it goes. See if you need to make any final improvements. When the board games are finished, we will play them together in class. You will receive feedback from your classmates, and you will be giving feedback to other groups based on the following criteria.

CRITERIA

You’ll receive feedback from your classmates on the following:

  • Presentation/Attractiveness
  • Creativity
  • Challenge
  • Fun and Entertainment
  • Instructions

I will evaluate your game based on the above feedback from your classmates who play the game as well as my own opinion.

UN Sustainability Goals

The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization that was created in 1945, after World War II, to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations.  In the beginning there were 50 countries that were members of the United Nations (UN).  Now, the UN has 193 Member States.  This project is about the United Nations Sustainability Goals to transform our world.  They were adopted by world leaders at an historic United Nations summit in 2015.  The United Nations hopes to achieve these Sustainability Goals by 2030.

This is a small group project.  You can work with one other classmate, or with two other classmates.  The maximum number of people who can be in your group is three.  Once you have your group, I will assign your topic.

Work towards really understanding your topic and explaining it to your classmates.  Start with this website: United Nations Sustainability Goals and look for your specific topic.  Here are some questions to help start your thinking:

1.        Describe the UN Goal you are studying in detail, using statistics and examples.

2.       Where, in the world, are the biggest challenges with your topic?

3.       What are governments around the world doing to work on this goal?

4.       What can people around the world do to achieve this goal?

5.       What can you do to help achieve this goal?

10.      Are there any careers based on this topic that inspire you?

Remember:

  • Use multiple sources (try for 3 or more) to find your information.  Use trusted sources.
  • Make sure to note where you found your information on a reference page.
  • Use your own words, don’t copy directly from websites or books (that’s plagiarism).
  • Create something to share that is informative and makes you proud.
  • Be prepared to present your learning by practicing in advance.

To show your learning, you may:

  • Create a slideshow or PowerPoint
  • Prepare a speech have some pictures to show the class
  • Create a poster using pictures and headings and explain the main points to the class
  • Make a video

Remember to include relevant images to make your presentation more interesting and informative.
